Once again, Ayushmann Khurrana came out to the big screen with a blast bringing out a topic, Indian families still hesitate to talk about.

While the Indian government after years and years has finally legalized same-sex relationships, there is a long way to go for gay couples to be completely accepted by society and in some cases their own families.

With breaking the stereotype with a magnificent hammer in his hand, Ayushman Khurana along with Jitender Kumar broke the glass ceiling and worked on something legitimately serious that has only been the subject of a joke in Bollywood till now.

The main focus of the film Subh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is not on a homosexual relationship but homophobia.

The two boys Kartik and Aman had been crazily in love with each other. While Kartik came out of the closet years ago, Aman still hasn’t revealed his sexuality to his parents.

The couple who are in a liven relationship begin with their trouble when Aman had to go home to the small town of Allahabad as he decides to finally confront his family with the support of his lover.

The flamboyantly enchanting and typical Bollywood boy, Kartik is never scared of the world. On the other side is his love Aman who is terrified of the idea that his father who is extreme homophobic will never understand who he is and their relationship.

The dignity with the same sex relationships in this movie has been treated is commendable and unmistakable.

Keeping the issue in mind, the dialogues between the characters are kept sensitive and heartfelt while Aman and Kartik share a crackling relationship.

While the genre of this movie (Subh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan) is comic, the comedy is not on the relationship but on the people around this loving couple which is the very first time in Bollywood. The gay characters or same sex relationships have only been a subject of the comic scheme but it seems like the change is coming.

When Aman finally gathers enough courage to express his love and to confess about his relationship with Kartik, out of anxiousness, he blabbers out everything in medical terms which is absolutely cute because he is so much in love and could not stop himself from expressing it in no matter what way he did.

The family of Aman has been kept under the limelight but the involvement has only made the situation more complicated with distant relatives being a part of it too.

In a scene, Aman’s father and his brother can be seen arguing over what turned him into a gay man. To the argument, Aman’s father Shankar Tripathi raises says that it was because Aman used to watch his uncle’s pornographic videos that had naked men. Highlighting the homophobic stereotypical mindset of more than half of the country, the character expresses the desperate need for education about the matter which has been barricaded by the obstacles people have put up in their minds.

The continuous quire between Kartik and Gajraj’s character Shankar Tripathi starts when he finds his son embracing Kartik like a lover on a train trip.

After that Kartik and Tripathi get into several arguments, a dance face-off, and a sentimental hit on the heart.

Aman’s parents played Neena Gupta and Gajraj were underused with the exceptional chemistry they had portrayed in Badhai Ho. Rather the Chacha and Chachi of Aman were way more comic and convincing when it came to cracking the audience up as in one scene they try to cover the couple’s PDA at their daughter’s wedding. The scene is an epic crack up.

Writer Hitesh Kewalya made sure the main issue of homophobic stereotype is highlighted along with the expression of feelings a gay couple shares. In the story, he depicted the love shared between the two so beautiful that it makes the audience realized that the intensity of love is always the same no matter what sexuality the partners belong to. To make it even more justified, Hitesh dropped in the evergreen Dil Wale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’s train scene where the family finally let the couple be together after realizing the incredible love they share.

The movie also stands right on Ayushmaan Khurana’s social message tab. The movie explains that gay people are as normal as straight persons. The two gay men shown in the movie are hard-working professionals who deny marrying a woman just for the convenience of keeping their sexuality a secret to escape the hardship society throws in the life of gays on a daily basis.

The exquisite cast of the film is engaged with bringing out the comic scenes in the simplest way with Ayushmaan acing it with the one-liners.

The stupendous comic time and incredible issue the story highlights with the utmost respect to the community makes it a must-watch.
