The small and medium budget films in the Bollywood industry are seeking ways to avoid losses from mounting in order to protect their future interests. The multiple chains have been avoiding these problems and simply pushed their state on the producers of the films.
They have titled the producers as villains of their lives due to the imbalance they are facing. In the recent past, you must have definitely come across several news channels, which claim that several Bollywood films have decided to opt for the OTT platforms keeping in mind the ground situation.
Everyone is aware the cinemas will be shut for a very long time considering the practice of social distancing. And the producers surely do not want to suffer, thus they have decided to accept the deals put forward by the OTT platforms.
The much-awaited films such as Gubalo Sitaabo starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, Vidya Balan’s Shakuntala Devi, Ponmagal Vadhal starring Jyothika and several other regional films have decided to go with the OTT platforms.
The digital way is best suited for the producers and it is pretty obvious they will go for better option. In case, the theatres do not open anytime soon then it is the budget of the film that will go for a toss, thus there is no other option but to choose this option.
Considering such situation, the producers are just avoiding the losses, which will keep mounting if no necessary action is taken. There is nothing wrong with this decision, right? Sources have revealed that the film, Shakuntala Devi starring Vidya Balan, was facing one crore debt with every day passing by before it shook hands with Amazon Prime.
After the deal was signed, the director managed to lift the entire production cost of the film from the concerned market. In the same manner, there are several other films which have not been released on OTT platforms and if they keep waiting the debt will increase every day. Waiting for the theatrical release is just waste of money and time in the current situation when everyone is well aware of the facts.
Furthermore, the films which have decided to wait for the theatrical release there will be an additional burden of financing the advertisements and printing news about the film. There is no promised certainty as such and no reason as to why the producers should wait for their films to release on the big screens.
Plus, if so many films keep on delaying their release, there will be madness after the theatres open. So many films would want to release at the same time. And that is nearly impossible. Again there will be financial rivalry for releasing the films and things will just worsen apart from adding to the financial burden. With so much of financial burden, the cost of the ticket will increase overall. It will be a difficult time for the audience to choose, which film to watch next.
Thus, the decision taken by most of the producers about cracking deals with the OTT platforms is not all selfish; it is merely pragmatic considering the ground situation due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The multiplex chains have however chosen to turn a blind eye towards these escalating burning issues. They have decided to claim the producers as villains. PVR and INOX chains have even issued official statements and have shown their discontent over the decision of the producers to choose the OTT platforms instead of waiting for the situation to get better.
They say that producers have lack of empathy and have poor conscience. They will really unhappy about the way producers have been dealing with the situation. Through the official letter the multiplex chains have expressed their displeasure and disappointment regarding the announcements made by the production houses. They feel that by skipping the theatre window and choosing the OTT platforms they are ruining relationships.
The letter also mentioned that cinemas and content have always been into a mutual benefitting relationship and resulted in finance generation for both. INOX argues that it has always been investing for the quality screens and ensured that both of them benefitted from the same.
However, they feel that it is now disturbing to see that the producers are turning their back simply because they are facing losses. They feel that this is the need of the hour and they should join hands to support each other. They feel that the producers have kicked out the life-long partners only for their temporary benefit.
Thus, INOX has decided that in future it will be taking necessary measures to deal with such producers.
